MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — Project DYNAMO executed two more relief flights into Jamaica on Saturday, delivering more than 2,000 pounds of critical supplies to hurricane-ravaged areas and evacuating eight additional Americans to the U.S., including a newlywed couple from Alabama who were on their honeymoon and rode out the storm trapped in a treehouse in Negril.
The veteran-led nonprofit’s latest actions under Operation Cool Runnings bring the total number of Americans rescued from Category 5 Hurricane Melissa’s devastation to 16.
Ground teams raced to conduct search-and-rescue missions, deliver supplies across western Jamaica and coordinate medical evacuations. Prior operations flew initial groups of stranded Americans from Montego Bay to Key West, Florida.
Additionally, Project DYNAMO plans to evacuate more Americans on Sunday, while one of their veteran-led rescue teams, including an Army Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Coast Guard veteran, are planning to conduct search and rescue operations in Western Jamaica.
While there is no shortage of work for the teams on the ground, the missions rack up major costs for aviation fuel, ground vehicles, lodging and overflight permits. Supporters can donate at projectdynamo.net.
