In 1940 over 400,000 British soldiers were stranded at Dunkirk in northern France while the Germans surrounded them on the Channel coast. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Vice Admiral Bertram Home Ramsay then planned one of the largest naval evacuations to bring them home. In his speech to the House of Commons, Churchill declared the events in France a colossal military disaster and the rescue operation a “miracle of deliverance”.
